Description
Kydex is a special thermoplastic (acrylic / PVC alloy) that becomes malleable when heated, then returns to being fully rigid again when cooled. This is a very popular material for amateur, professional, and commercial knife makers, as it is extremely durable and forms perfectly to the shape of your knife after only a few minutes in a normal kitchen oven.
We recommend adding a few layers of masking tape to your blade so the knife slips in and out without pinching, the sheath instead gripping onto the bolster or handle material with a positive “click”. We also recommend taping a toothpick or similar to the tip of your blade so that the Kydex forms a small hole at the bottom of the sheath – making a perfect drainage channel.
Don’t forget a set of Kydex Rivets, and heat-resistant foam for making your own Kydex Press.
Note: Kydex has a textured outer side and a shiny inner side. When forming your sheath be sure to fold the sheet so that the inner (shiny) sides are pressed together to achieve maximum adhesion.
